What was Lincoln's personal belief about slavery?

He supported it in new states

    It is the consensus nowadays in the popular culture that it was Lincoln who as absolutely anti - slavery but that had not been the case for long.

    he did amass enough support from south and he was also not willing to concede that slavery could end as soon as it did.

    For him it was a concern of political reasons and the states that were seceding and how they would have ultimately broken the system of US that prompted the civil war and not necessarily slavery itself.

    He had famously said that if he could keep southern states with the slavery he would have.
