    Although they fought for the abolition of slavery, the armies of the Union treated blacks mainly as inferiors, with poor equipment and less pay. These individuals fought alongside Union soldiers, but also worked as cooks, nurses, and blacksmiths. Almost 40,000 black soldiers died in the war.
