Between the years of 1848 to 1850 took place in Mexico a Gold Rush where American commodores and governors promised the Mexican-Californians to guarantee their land titles by signing on February 2nd, 1848 a treat called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, giving to the Mexican residents their American citizenship.

During the excitement of such Gold Rush confidential agents of the United States examined the archives looking documents that could be used as legal proof in United States courts. However, most of the documents were in Spanish which caused much disagreement when taking the legal decisions that confirmed or denied such titles.

As a result of the described above Mexico was forced to accept the appropriation of Texas by the American government as well as turning over the United States Mexican territories which now include most of the states of Arizona, New Mexico, and California.
