As a response to the overall negative opinions the citizens of the United States towards the events happening in the Vietnam war, President Richard Nixon started the policy of "Vietnamization". This consisted of a process of training Southern Vietnam troops in order for them to take a greater role in the war against Northern Vietnam. At the same time, US troops would gradually retreat the conflict zone until Southern Vietnam troops would eventually take on Northern Vietnam by themselves.

This ultimately resulted in failure. As the alliance between US Troops and Southern Vietnam troops were not able to prevent the capture of the Southern Vietnamese capital, Saigon by the Northern Vietnamese army.
