What did the u. S. Government do to encourage the settlement of the west?

    The government protected western settlement with troops and pushed the Indians off western lands. The Federal government also financed the constructed of the first transcontinental railroad in the west. This included giving huge land grants to the railroads to get them to push westward. It also gave cheap land to settlers
