Quilombo dos Palmares, commonly known as Palmares, was a community which served as settlements for survivors and free-born enslaved African people, mulattos, Indians, poor whites, as well as Portuguese soldiers who were trying to escape forced military service. It was located in what is today the Brazilian state of Alagoas from 1605 until its conquest in 1694.

Palmares came to be home to one-third of enslaved Africans reason why, due to its reputation as well as its large size, it was the target for attacks from two European imperialist countries: The Kingdom of the Netherlands, or the Netherlands, and Portugal. The first attempt to destroy it was made in 1612, six years after its founding.
