Pesthouses were buildings used to quarantine people with incestuous diseases. They were used to prevent the spread of disease especially diseases like the plague, smallpox, cholera, and tuberculosis. Before science improved people who were brought to pesthouses could expect to die soon after. Pesthouses were located near cemeteries to prevent the spread of disease when moving bodies as well. As science improved pesthouses transformed to hospitals where doctors began to treat diseases instead of waiting for them to take the lives of the victims.
