Civil Liberties are freedoms and basic rights, that protect individuals from government abuse and tyranny. In the United States civil liberties are protected by being stated in the Bill of Rights (the first 10 amendments of the United States Constitution).

An example of a civil liberty is freedom of speech.

On the other hand, Civil Rights prevent discrimination against an individual because of their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or age. Civil rights ensure equal treatment to all individuals. Civil rights are protected in the 13th and 14th amendments of the United States Constitution and as a form of laws passed by the Federal Government. For example:

The fourteenth amendment states "equal protection of the laws", no matter the race or gender of a citizen.
