English settlers arrived in the New England and the Chesapeake in the 17th century. The factors that were accountable for the development and limitation of religion in these two regions were the Separatist Puritans and the Government. There were some Puritans who wanted to displace the authority of the ministers of the church, therefore they were the ones who promoted the religious freedom. They believed that the religious unity was crucial to social order. On the other hand, the government was that main factor which confined the idea of religious freedom.
