The ascension of Andrew Jackson to presidency has been known as the "Triumph of the White Man's Democracy" due to his egalitarian ideals being centered towards white men and often discluding African Americans, women, and Hispanic and American indigenous people of the western United States.

The Republican Party of Jefferson changed its name to the Democratic Party under Andrew Jackson. Initially calling themselves "Democratic Republicans" after splitting in 1824, the name was shortened to be "Democrats". The party split over tensions about who would succeed James Monroe.
