Slaves in the New England Colonies served as the workforce in various manufacturing industries, which were starting to develop at the time. In contrast, slaves in the Southern Colonies were purely dedicated to the agricultural industry. They were the primary workforce behind the cotton boom of the 19th century. Slaves in the New England Colonies were normally owned by wealthy landowners. On the other hand, the slave trade was a very common practice among all settlers in the Southern Colonies. Slaves in the New England Colonies tended to receive a better education in comparison to slaves in the Southern Colonies.
