    They built the canals to be a safe and short way to travel by boat.

    Explanation:

    To travel by boat you needed to go all the way around so they dug the canals to be a sort of short cut. Panama was very small and slim so it was easy to build there isted of a larger and more thick country. The concers consisted of bombing because they had to use explosives to dig it out, flooding, diseases of yellow fever and malaria were dangerous obstacles also, and excavation problems.
