That men and women were likely thought to be equals and hunting was essential for survival.

If gender roles had not formed in regard to survival and food collection, then there probably were not many gender roles in the society. Men and women would be taught the same skills so both could hunt effectively. This also suggests that societies were probably small requiring all members of society to participate in food collection so people could eat. Hunting would have been the main source for food but also for materials to make clothes and tools.
