In Europe in the first place, the end of World War I saw the rise of totalitarian regimes, primarily Germany and Italy, the Soviet Union but also Spain. These ideological worldviews are directly opposed to a democracy that had a foothold in Britain, France, the United States. Two directly opposed ideological patterns inevitably had to lead to war. Totalitarianism posed a threat to civilization because of everything it contained within its doctrine. The principles of totalitarian regimes include elements that grossly violate fundamental human rights.
