The two groups of peasants living and working on manors were Serfs and freeman. The condition of serfs was very desperate as compared to freeman. The serfs were bonded to the lands of lords and had no freedom to move from the same. They had no rights and were treated as slaves and common property of manor. On the other hand freeman were a kind of peasants who were not beholden by any manor. They had no masters and were free. They were free to enter and exit the lands whenever they wanted to do so.
