From november 4 1979 to january 20 1981 - 52 americans were held hostage at the U S Embassy in Tehran. The Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line were the hostage takers. The dispute was primarily because the "Shah of Iran" was overthrown. The Shah was granted asylum by the United States so he could be treated for cancer. Iran wanted the Shah to stand trial for crimes he committed during his regime.

In April 1980 President Jimmy Carter authorized an attempt to rescue the hostages. The attempt failed resulting in the death of 9 people - 8 service men and 1 civilian.

In late 1980 Iraq attacked Iran which caused the Iranian government to enter into negotiations with the U. S., with Algeria as a mediator.

The hostages were released in 1981 while President Ronald Reagan was taking office.
