Texas had been looking for independence since the formation of the Mexican state

    Explanation:

Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1820s and since then Texas had been about to become independent due to their concern with linguistics and other cultural factors differing from the nation.

This culminated into some skirmishes that had ended badly for the Texas forces.

Then after a crushing defeat at Almo, soldiers were gathered for a swift attack

On April 21, 1836, Houston's army won a quick battle against the Mexican forces at San Jacinto and they declared that they had won their independence.
