    He promises the Muses he will tell of their greatness.

    Dante was a classic man. He followed the Renaissance need to copy the habits from the Roman culture. One of those habits was to invoke the muses before starting an important work, so he he did it at the beginnig of his canticles in the Divine Comedy.
