A commonwealth status with equality within the empire was the kind of adjustment that the British might have made to stop the colonial rebellion escalation. This action would have stopped the rebellion since this is one of the things that the rebellion wanted to happen.

In relation with this, the acceptance of taxation and a status short of independence is the kind of retreat that the colonist would have had to make in order for it to be acceptable to Britain.
