In the mid-16th century a European ship that was traveling in Eastern Asia got caught by a storm. The storm managed to move the ship in another direction from where it was suppose to go, and the ship ended on the shores of Japan. Japan was a country still unknown to the Europeans, and this was the first contact with the Japanese people and their culture. The Europeans find the Japanese people and their culture very weird and interesting, and the Japanese were on the same opinion for the Europeans. Japan was not very interested in opening up tot he world on a large scale, so despite the contact and other Europeans later trying to make good relations with them, the Japanese mostly kept themselves isolated.
