German writer of the Romantic period. The Sorrows of Young Werther was a novel published in 1774 that introduced readers to a hero who completely followed his heart rather than his head. Told mainly through a series of letters, the young hero tells us what he is thinking and feeling. In addition to being a novelist, he was a poet, playwright, critic, and even a scientist.
