Popular sovereignty allowed states to decide for themselves whether or not they would allow slavery. The Missouri Compromise allowed slavery in states south of the 36 degree 30 minute parallel line. Popular sovereignty went against what was previously agreed to in the Missouri Compromise, which is why it "undermined the Missouri Compromise".
