Between 1880 and 1920, a time of rapid industrialization and urbanization, America received more than 20 million immigrants. The majority of the arrivals were from southern and Eastern Europe, mostly Italian and Jews fleeing the religious prosecution in Eastern Europe (Russia, Romania, Hungary).

The Italians arriving in the States were escaping poverty in their own country. They were peasants from south Italy, farmers and laborers, most of them were single men. They spoke little to no English and the religion they practiced was Catholicism.
