The Grand Canal was largely a creation of the Sui Dynasty as a result of the migration of the region from china s economic and agricultural core to the yellow river valley and what are now the provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. It s main role was the transport of grain to the capital. However, the establishment of the Grand Canal by the Sui also avoided the need for the army, while on the northern border, to be self sufficient on behalf of the farmers, since food supplies coul then be easily sent by the channel from south to north. Parallel to the canal was an imperial road that supported postal post supporting a messagign system. In the MIng Dynasty, the official stations were placed at intervals of 35 to 45 km, being one of the communicarion sources of the time.
