The 1850 Compromise refers to a set of legislative measures proposed by Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky and unanimously approved by Congress and the Gazette as laws. Senator Henry Clay came to be referred to as "the big compromiser". The laws were passed with the aim of easing the tension created by pending slavery issues that threatened to dissolve the union.
