Sherman's total-war strategy led to a different class of warfare that was unrestricted in terms of the weapons used, the combatants involved, objectives of war as well as a disregard of the laws of warfare. The determination to completely destroy the enemy completely wrought havoc as was apparent in World War I and World War II
