Both the US government and the public felt outraged after the unprovoked, surprising Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. President F. D. Roosevelt went to Congress and asked it to declare war on Japan, declaring that December 7, 1941, would be "a date that will live in infamy." Americans adopted a patriotic attitude and became willing to enter the war. American men enlisted as volunteers to serve in the Army. The whole economy was mobilized to serve the needs of war.
