William Tweed, better known as "Boss" Tweed, was the boss of the Tammany Machine.

The Tammany Machine was the political machine put in place by the Democratic Part in New York that set up a political system that rewarded loyal voters with jobs.

The Tammany Machine was particularly effective at mobilizing and rewarding young immigrant men and one of the most powerful bases for the Tammany Machine & Boss Tweed, was New York City's Irish Catholic voters.
