    B. Americans were afraid of a possible nuclear attack

    Explanation:

During the 1950's, the general belief of the Americans when it came to the Cold War was that they might get attacked with nuclear weapons at any time. This was largely due to the growing military power and threat that the Soviet Union possessed. The Soviets did not held back when it came to threatening the US and it had no fear of it whatsoever, which was only going in their advantage as they gained Cuba as an ally and as base right next door to the American soil. The public was understandably concerned and panicked, especially because the tensions were constantly on the rise between the two global superpowers.
