B. It was a strategic location, but it could of been bypassed to get to Moscow. Hitler wanted it captured because the name was also significant in a symbolic way to the soviets, capturing it would of hurt soviet morale, thus making it easy to defeating the Soviet Union. The Soviets spilled a lot of blood there because Stalin didn't want the Nazis capturing a land named after himself.
