The territory which is now the country of Vietnam was known as the colony of French Indochina. The Vietnamese attempted to proclaim independence over the territory in 1945, after the surrender of the Japanese forces, which occupied the area, during World War 2. However, the French managed to suppress this attempt in what is known as the "First Indochina War" of 1945. However, they were ultimately expelled from the territory in 1954, when the Vietnamese forces, supported by the Chinese, took control of the government and its resources.
