The 1852 election was between Democrat Franklin Pierce and General Winfield Scott. This election was the last one to see the Whigs as the main opposition to the Democrats. The issues that were relevant in this election were the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law and the extension of slavery into other territories. The election caused the decline of the Whig Party.

On the other hand, the election of 1860 was a four-way contest where the victorious one was Abraham Lincoln. This served as one of the catalyst for the Civil War. Some of the relevant issues in this campaign were slavery, the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the case Dred Scott v. Sandford. It also led to the rise of the Republican Party.
