The French revolution convinced many that mass voting could not take place as the common man was not educated enough to vote.

So in the Constitution, the States Legislatures chose the senators, and the electoral college elected the President.

It was also believed that too much direct majority rule could possibly hinder the rights of the minority groups, that is why filters were placed.

The makers of the constitution place filters because they thought a man was not smart enough and the founding fathers believed that too much direct majority rule could be a possible hindrance to the rights of the minority groups, so they placed the electoral college and direct election of United States into the Constitution.
