    The Calvert's wanted to create a sanctuary for Catholics to practice their faith.

    Following the leadership of Elizabeth I, England officially turned to the Anglican Church or the Church of England as the main faith in England. In some cases, it became dangerous for Catholics to remain in England to to danger of persecution. George Calvert requested the colony of Maryland to be a sanctuary for Catholics. His son would secure the land and establish the colony of Maryland.
