During the time, the rich were very rich and the poor were very poor. While nobles lived in lavish manors and townhouses, many lower-class French citizens could barely afford bread. On top of this, France had just been in both the seven years war, and aided the colonists in the revolutionary war. Because of this France was very deep in debt and the king (I think it was Louis XIV, but don't quote me on that) called a meeting of the estates generals, which hadn't happened in centuries. In the estates general, each group (the church, the nobility, and the people) each got one vote. The church and the nobility used their 2:1 majority to tax the French people even more. When the 3rd estate (the people) heard about this, they left to meet in a neighboring tennis court and signed the tennis court oath, which is seen as the start of the revolution
