Because England had sent various burning ships into the harbor where the Armada had anchored, and due to a change in the direction of the wind the Spanish Armada did not have other alternative but to retreat towards the North Sea. Although the English Navy followed the Armada for a while, it eventually had to turn back because it needed more supplies. Severe storms and a lack of supplies forced the Armada to return to Spain for good.
