    One reason is that " the sea passage around the Cape of Good Hope, which is at the bottom of Africa was treacherous and many ships sank there. Given the new idea that the earth was not flat but spherical, it seemed possible to make the journey to Asia in the opposite direction and perhaps with fewer casualties."
