Why were European empires competing over territory to expand their empires?

    Mostly to gain resources, which mostly expanded during and after the Industrial Age. Since they were trying to support the global demand for luxuries, they needed materials to make those products. Thus they imperialized lands as seen in the Scramble of Africa and Spheres of Influence.
