    British imperialism had the effect of destroying the economies of underdeveloped countries by breaking up the age-old patterns of their agrarian economy, and by forcing shifts to the production of cash crops. This also had a polluting effect on the environment through factory emissions. Through divide and conquer, it led to ethnic based politics
