Explanation:

In the 19th century South Carolina depended much on the cultivation of cotton. Especially the Low Country planters depended heavily on slaves. They fought federal tariffs in the 1830s and demanded the recognition of its rights on practising slavery. With the election of A. Lincoln (opposed to slavery's expansion) in 1860 the voters demanded secession and a year later joined the Confederate States. In the same year American Civil War broke out.
