France was one of the most powerful countries and it had numerous colonies all over the world, including in Southeast Asia and North Africa. Vietnam and Algeria were part of the French colonies, but they had different decolonization processes.

Algeria was decolonized largely by negotiations and generally in peaceful manner. The country remained a partner of France and they developed nice and strong ties.

Vietnam on the other side, went into a war with France. It was a long and bloody war with multiple other countries getting involved, with the end result being liberation of Vietnam. The two nations have ''bad blood'' between them and their relations are not the best even nowadays.
