Where do you live? Is it somewhere in the deep South or Southern California? If you live in either of those two places, you will be very confused by the question. The answer is because they needed to till the land, and they landed in a place that gets winter.

Winter can be very cold - - harsh is the way it was decribed by one native of Boston. I think Massachusetts for example, drops down below 32 Fahrenheit once or twice a year, and with a wind from the sea, it can be much colder. It also gets snow. That's bad news for people who like to wear shorts.
