    -East Germany was ruled between 1949 and 1989 by the Unified Socialist Party of Germany (SED). The SED was the product of the absorption of the Social Democratic Party of Germany by the Communist Party of Germany in the eastern part of the country. This party established a government was characterized by carrying out a single party system, with total control of the economic, political and social activity of the country under a communist regime.

    -West Germany was a Federal Republic, with a democratic and capitalist organization of government. Legislative power was exercised by the Federal Parliament; and the executive power by the chancellor and the council of ministers.
