The spirit of social equality united the American people together in the decades following the American Revolution. The American Revolution interrupted and transformed traditional class and social relationships. It was effective for some sectors of the population. More white men gained the vote as property requirements were removed. Northern states began to free slaves, but southerner states were reluctant. Although many women remained largely confined to the domestic sphere afterward, with no changes to their legal or political status. Also, Native Americans, regardless of which side they had embraced, had their land seized by American settlers, often violating existing land treaties.
