The Constitution as originally written contained no guarantee of religious liberty. Despite his position as a slaveholder, Charles Pinckney, delegate to the Constitutional Convention from South Carolina, was responsible for the end of Article VI of the U. S. Constitution, which states that elected officials and judges wouldn't be required any religious Test as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust.
