Where did Europen nations badly needed sources from during WW1

They needed resources because neither side was making any progress every time they fought. they basically wasted resources which is why they needed it so badly during WWI. No only that but the Industrial time period was happening which took people out of working to fight for the country so not many people could make the resources that they needed so quickly.
