Positions taken by Mary Lease Elizabeth in her book published in 1895 laid out her new vision for America, Lease proposed that the United States should take possession of Cuba, Canada, and the West Indies; set up colonies in these areas; and create free trade for the western hemisphere. She further noted that the government should take control of the telegraph systems and railroad, launch political reforms, and adopt free silver. She gained her fame in her passionate speeches on behalf of farmers and the Populist Party in the 1890s.
