Why was economy of New England based on commerce

New England's geography informed why it was driven by commerce.

New England had access to bountiful forests and a rich coastline full of fish and as such was able to build ships and launch them from ports that were located on major trading routes between Europe and the Caribbean and were also located next to major cod banks.
