New England's bread and butter, as it were, was the maritime industry and the lumber industry.

New England is situated along the Atlantic Ocean and prime trade and fishing routes. It also is the nexus for many waterways inland.

So, lumber was harvested to build ships that were used to trade products and to fish cod.
