The war was fought as Japan was afraid that it would hamper the plans of creating its sphere of influence in Manchuria and Korea as Russia has been following an expansionist policy since 16th century and wanted to get a port in the Pacific ocean as it didn't had any warm water ports. The Japanese government considered Russian plans to be a thereat. The unique thing about this war was that it was the first war in which a major European power was defeat by the Asian nation.
